Overview

Understanding wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom teeth (third molars) erupt between 17 and 25, and in most Indian jaws there simply isn't room for them. They emerge tilted, half-covered by gum, or locked horizontally against the next tooth — 'impacted'. The result is the familiar cycle of pericoronitis (the swollen, painful gum flap over a half-erupted tooth), food trapping, decay in the hard-to-clean corner, and pressure damage to the healthy second molar in front. A wisdom tooth causing repeated trouble is best removed; one that's fully erupted, clean and functional can absolutely stay.

Surgical removal at CareWell is done by Dr. Smriti Sharma, MDS oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Planning starts with an OPG, and for lower teeth whose roots sit near the inferior alveolar nerve, a CBCT 3D scan maps the exact root-to-nerve relationship before we operate — this is the step that makes the difference between routine surgery and risk. The procedure itself takes 30–45 minutes under local anaesthesia: the gum is lifted, a little bone trimmed if needed, the tooth often sectioned into pieces and lifted out gently, and the site closed with dissolving stitches.

Recovery is front-loaded: swelling peaks around day two, is clearly settling by day four, and the first week's plan (cold packs, soft food, salt-water rinses from day two, no smoking) is sent to your WhatsApp. We deliberately schedule surgical slots on Wednesdays and Saturdays so working patients can recover over minimal leave.

Why patients choose it

The case for wisdom tooth removal

Ends the pain cycle

Removing the impacted tooth ends recurring pericoronitis flare-ups for good — not just until the next episode.

Protects the tooth in front

An impacted third molar pressing on the second molar causes decay and root damage that's expensive to repair and silent until late.

Nerve-safe planning

CBCT mapping of the nerve canal before lower extractions is our standard, not an add-on — precision is the safety feature.

Specialist hands

Your surgeon has removed thousands of third molars; difficult positions are her routine, not her adventure.

Faster recovery than feared

Sectioned, minimal-trauma removal and good closure mean most patients are at work within 48 hours.

Both sides, one recovery

Same-side upper and lower can be removed in one sitting — one course of medicines, one set of leave days.

What happens, step by step

Your treatment journey

No mystery, no mid-treatment surprises — this is the exact sequence we will walk you through at your consultation.

01

OPG & CBCT assessment

The panoramic X-ray grades the impaction; for lower teeth near the nerve canal, a CBCT maps the anatomy in 3D. You see the scan and the plan.

02

Anaesthesia & comfort

Profound local anaesthesia, tested before starting. Anxious patients can opt for an oral sedative — you stay awake but genuinely relaxed.

03

Surgical removal

Gum lifted, minimal bone trimmed, tooth sectioned and removed in controlled pieces — 30–45 minutes, pressure but no pain.

04

Closure & instructions

The site is irrigated and closed with dissolving sutures. You leave with cold packs, medicines, and the recovery sheet on WhatsApp.

05

Review at one week

Healing check and any remaining suture removal. Most patients report the anticipation was far worse than the week.
